The west coast of Mallorca welcomes you with a unique natural backdrop, characterised by the steeply rising mountain ranges of the Serra de Tramuntana, whose highest peaks rise more than 1,400 m into the sky, the highest being the 1,445 m high Puig Major. The entire stretch of coast between Andratx in the south-west via Estellenc, Banyalbufar, Valldemossa, Deià, Soller and Sa Calobra in the far north-west is known as the west coast. To get an impression of the unrivalled beauty of the west coast, we recommend a drive along the wild and romantic coastal road that connects Port d'Andratx with Port de Sóller.
The mountain range with its wild gorges and rugged ridges was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2011. The cliffs drop vertically into the sea in many places along the coastal region and the waves of the Mediterranean crash against the cliffs with elemental force when the sea is rough. Many of the bays can only be reached on foot via old mule tracks or from the water - a unique landscape. Sandy beaches are in short supply on the west coast of Mallorca. However, many of the pebble coves are not overcrowded, even in the high season. Tiny mountain villages are hidden in wild valleys, which boast lush vegetation due to the higher rainfall here. Stone floors, wooden beamed ceilings and an open fireplace give many of the houses in this region a very special atmosphere.
Around three kilometres from the coast, the small town of Sóller lies in a wide basin of the Tramuntana mountains, known as the "Valley of Gold". The name originated at the time of Arab domination of Mallorca. At that time, thousands of olive trees grew in the fertile valley, from whose fruit the valuable olive oil was extracted. Sóller welcomes you with its charming architecture and is surrounded by lemon and orange groves.
The small town is connected to the nearby Port de Sóller by a tram line, which was established in 1912 and is now one of the attractions on the west coast of Mallorca. Port de Sóller is a maritime holiday paradise, situated on a charming bay and with a protected natural harbour. Pure holiday idyll awaits you in the mountain village of Valldemossa, which lies in the middle of the Tramuntana mountains and has managed to retain its original charm to this day.
